Xiu Xiu is an experimental American band formed in Los Angeles. Over the last two decades, Xiu Xiu has had a consistent and dazzling output of acclaimed albums and collaborations. Xiu Xiu makes vulnerable music at the intersection of noise, pop and industrial, and their album 13'' Frank Beltrame Italian Stiletto with Bison Horn Grips is just that.
13'' Frank Beltrame Italian Stiletto with Bison Horn Grips is Xiu Xiu's latest record, but only on the face of it. Underneath that face is the struggle of a need seeks to name itself over every record, and every song ever written by Xiu Xiu themselves, as well as everyone who has ever tried to make a record.
Nine songs to seal the deal for those who still listen to all nine songs in order, because the message cannot be read in pieces. Mixed by John Congleton who got the message from the band to feel free to ''go crazy'' and if there was ever any doubt about its meaning, by all means ''choose iconoclasm''.
This record sounds (and feels) like it does care about you. A feeling that masks the randomness of our place in this world, or even more completely, sets it off as the true face of all our public endeavours.
Support act: Geier aus Stahl
Geier aus Stahl is one of the many artistic guises of Rotterdam-based musician Leonard Prochazka. After paving his way out of the underground of German-speaking countries, Geier aus Stahl released his debut album “Strapazen und Genesung” (Strain and Recovery) on the Dutch imprint Knekelhuis in 2022 which was named unmistakable throwback record with influences from the top tier of cold wave electronics, industrial and vintage electro-pop. While investigating themes such as destructive power relations, autonomy, and questions concerning “the self,” no superfluous elements take away from the core experience of his sound. Geier aus Stahl takes us to an exciting world that twists, squeaks, and creaks, yet is grounded by an unmistakable groove. When performing live, he has a control-freak-meets-punk attitude, connecting with his audience in a primal way.
“Noise pop experimentalists Xiu Xiu are back doing what they do best: writing a genuinely sticky, well-constructed tune and subsequently running it through a meat grinder.”
