De Doelen is a huge building. Wandering through the building you can come across 33 rooms, each with its own function. Think of the concert halls, rehearsal rooms, dressing rooms and presentation rooms. There are also floors with offices. Below we take you along the various rooms and tell you some fun facts.
three quarters
The building is divided into three 'quarters': Grote Zaal Kwartier, Jurriaanse Kwartier and the 'business' Willem Burger Kwartier. The three parts can be connected to each other. During festivals and international conferences, for example, both the Willem Burger Hall and the Jurriaanse Foyer are transformed into the heart of the festival. But all quarters can also be used separately, so that several events take place at the same time.
concert halls
The halls in which concerts are given to the public are the best known: the Grote Zaal, the Jurriaanse Zaal and the Eduard Flipse Zaal.
The Grote Zaal naturally bears this name because of its size. Since the renovation in 2009 - during which seats were renewed, the ventilation system replaced and the technology improved - the largest hall of the Doelen has had 2190 seats. The stage contains an advanced computer system that shows the preferred arrangement of well-known orchestras at the touch of a button.
The renovation of the Kleine Zaal in 1997 is largely due to the support of the J.E. Jurriaanse Stichting, hence the name change to Jurriaanse Zaal. This hall is regarded as one of the best in the world for chamber music and is called the 'Jur' by the Doelen employees.
The Eduard Flipse Zaal is the place for (small-scale) pop and jazz concerts. The hall is named after Eduard Flipse (1896 -1973), who was the conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra from 1926 to 1962. In 1973, The Rolling Stones secretly rehearsed here for five days for their European tour.
flexible terrain
The Willem Burger Kwartier was opened in 2000 and was built especially for conferences and business meetings. The multifunctional area is now also regularly transformed into a festival heart or unique concert hall, where visitors can experience the music even closer. In the past, this neat business area even served as a sports ground!
International Congress Center
De Doelen has many years of experience in event organization. From major international events to intimate symposia – we can facilitate the most diverse conferences. We have rooms of different sizes: from 2100 visitors to 150, there is a room for every variation. And by using adjacent rooms, the capacity can be increased, up to 3,500 visitors.
