The New Now YOUNG x GRASnacht x Rizoom

Sometimes still rough, sometimes very beautiful, but always innovative and surprising. This edition of The New Now YOUNG revolves around Rizoom makers, and the markers who worked with Ask|Schönberg in the GRASpunt. 

GRASpunt is an industrial hangar in the north of Amsterdam where Asko|Schönberg rehearses. The young, pioneering makers who experiment and create in this space are usually presented twice a year during their own GRASnight. Now GRASnight comes to Rotterdam for The New Now YOUNG.  
 
The makers of Rizoom (a collaboration for young, innovative makers between de Doelen and other podia, festivals and ensembles) will also open the doors of their rehearsal room. They will try out new fragments of their music and make you feel part of their music in progress.

Rizoom is for makers in the contemporary music world, and everything it touches. As individual or as a collective, self-taught or educated. De Doelen is a partner of the Rizoom-network.  

Anushka Chkheidze | GRASnacht | Jurriaanse Zaal | 19:00 - 19:30
Anushka Chkheidze, from Tbilisi, Georgia, composes electronic music, creating an immersive world of ambient and IDM (intelligent dance music), blending serene synths with complex rhythms. Inspired by traditional Georgian choirs, Anushka collaborates during her GRASpunt residency with three vocalists from the Slavuj ensemble and a percussionist from the Asko|Schönberg ensemble to create a new piece infused with polyphonic experiments and repetitive rhythms. The goal of the residency is to explore the intersection of electronic and acoustic sounds together. The voice, as the most essential human instrument, is expressed most clearly in electronic music. This ongoing work will be presented in a concert where musicians attempt to showcase their instruments in unconventional and innovative ways.

Luke Deane | GRASnacht | Jurriaanse Foyer | 20:00 - 20:30
The English artist Luke Deane enjoys delving into interdisciplinary projects. As a composer, he is currently collaborating on the new co-production between Asko|Schönberg, NITE & NKK: "Nachtwacht". Additionally, he performs under his alter ego Lisa and is currently working on a studio album filled with pop-inspired sounds.
For GRASnacht x De Doelen on December 1st, Luke will present his ‘video game opera’. For this performance, he collaborated with a game designer/graphic artist to create an entirely new online game world, accompanied by a soundtrack composed by Luke. The various actions in the game are supported by live sounds and music from musicians on stage.

Pensive Vivifier | GRASnacht | TBD | 21:00 - 21:30
Pensive Vivifier merges digital and physical worlds. This anti-disciplinary ensemble (consisting of Janne Kosmos, Tes Wolters Bos & Silva Westera) moves fluidly between video art, performance, musical composition, and clubbing. Everything unfolds within the same cosmos, influencing and enhancing one another. Using an associative approach, sampling, humor, and music, they connect content from all corners of the internet, creating intimate moments amid the overwhelming flow of information.
During their residency, Pensive Vivifier explored the audio-visual archive of Asko|Schönberg and collaborated with violinist Noa Eyl and trombonist Koen Kaptijn to reflect on their relationship with this heritage. The musicians also improvised using their own secondary instruments. The audio recordings were later integrated into Pensive Vivifier's video compositions.
The ensemble will continue their residency, working towards a larger project with A|S in 2026, within the framework of the Matthäus Passion. The performance at GRASnacht on December 1st at De Doelen will offer a preview of this project.

A Myth for Piano – An Intriguing Performance within a Web of Piano Strings

“Read it, it doesn’t say what it says,” wrote Martinus Nijhoff. This could serve as a motto for the elusive young artist Mees Vervuurt. A Myth for Piano is an intriguing solo performance at the intersection of dance, installation, and physical theater. Slowly yet with great intensity, percussionist Mees Siderius moves through the twilight in a mysterious web of horizontally stretched threads. Everything crackles and creaks. The strings come from an upright piano, but Vervuurt's true instrument is your imagination. What do I see? What do I hear? What do I feel?

Mees Vervuurt creates musical performances for specific spaces, in close collaboration with performers. These are poetic, dreamlike worlds where music, visuals, movement, and space converge. The figure in A Myth for Piano is reminiscent of Sisyphus, eternally rolling his boulder uphill. This work serves as a preliminary study for the larger performance A Myth, set to be presented in 2025. Vervuurt is also making strides internationally, having previously worked with Opera North in Leeds and The Alternative Conservatoire in London.
