The biggest spring cleaning of de Doelen

Attentive passers-by and visitors to de Doelen have long noticed: one of the largest spring cleaning jobs in the history of the building is in full swing. In January of this year, the first steps were taken in a major renovation project commissioned by the Urban Development Department of the Municipality of Rotterdam to tackle the exterior of the Doelen.

A team of hard workers from Imto Vastgoed Verduurzamers started cleaning the facade of the magnificent building. A very large job that will not be completed until around mid-May. Slowly but surely, the original shade of the facades is reappearing and after the cleaning, the very special natural stone is being restored.

Director Janneke Staarink: "Once every twenty years, it is time for a major exterior cleaning, commissioned by the Department of Urban Development. The fact that this coincides exactly with the restyling of the interior and the recent opening of the plinth is of course fantastic! Thanks to the Department of Urban Development of the Municipality of Rotterdam and engineering firm IOB, they were able to get to work, with high-pressure cleaners, aerial platforms, special abseiling techniques and a great deal of expertise and energy."

And not only has the facade been cleaned, but the natural stone is also being restored. In mid-May, one of the most beautiful buildings in Rotterdam will finally shine again in the spring sun, and will be completely ready to receive visitors.

Staarink once again "Every day, de Doelen becomes a little cleaner and more sustainable and is being restored to its former splendor, how great is that?"
