‘Davóne Tines is changing what it means to be a classical singer’, kopte The New Yorker. In zijn voorstelling MASS speelt de Amerikaanse bas-bariton met de conventies van de klassieke muziek, en laat hij thema’s als ras en seksualiteit een rol spelen. Noem zijn projecten politiek, voor Tines zijn ze persoonlijk en existentieel.

Bas-bariton Davóne Tines is al een fenomeen in Amerika, maar in Europa nog rising. In Nederland kennen we Davóne uit de opera-producties van regisseur Peter Sellars, o.a. Girls of the Golden West en Only the Sound Remains. Maar sinds kort is hij ook begonnen aan zijn eerste reeks solo-recitals, waarin hij de mis als uitgangspunt heeft genomen. The New York Times omschreef zijn recital als “a compelling reconceptualization of the recital format from an artist who molded his warm, strong voice like clay in a bracingly vulnerable, honest performance.” 

Contrasterende spirituele muziekvormen uit West-Europese, Afro-Amerikaanse en 21e-eeuwse tradities komen samen in MASS. Tines bouwt dit concert op als een katholieke mis, waarin hij alles bij elkaar brengt waarmee hij is opgegroeid: spirituals en gospelsongs, Bach, opera en nieuw gecomponeerde muziek.
